FAQ's

Additional Information

Q:  What is counseling?

A:  Professional counseling is a professional relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families, and groups to accomplish mental health, wellness, education, and career goals.

Q:  What is a counselor trained to do?

A:  A mental health professional is trained to help you deal with difficult patterns of behaviors, develop coping skills, improve your desire for personal development, learn how to approach situations in ways that can be effective in confronting various circumstances.  This is all done in a confidential, non-judgemental and  safe environment.  I do this through being empathetic, congruent (genuine) and unconditional positive regard (acceptance).

Q:  How often will we meet?

A:  Therapy can entail meeting weekly or bi-weekly depending on your specific needs and how much time you have to devote to the process.

Q:  How long does therapy last?

A:   Therapy visits are typically 50-60 minutes per session.   It can be short or long term depending on your specific needs.  We will work together to set goals, push through limiting beliefs, change irrational thoughts, and embark on self-discovery.

Q:  How can therapy help me?

A:  Therapy can be very beneficial.  I can provide support by actively listening and offering coping strategies for various mental health issues, problem solving skills and new perspectives on various problems, which often lead to solution focused resolutions.  The benefits you obtain from therapy depend on how well you use the process and put into practice what you learn.

Some of the benefits available from therapy include:

  • New coping mechanisms to manage stress and anxiety
  • A better understanding of who you are, as well as your goals and values
  • New skills for improving various relationships in your life
  • Improvement of communication skills
  • Boost in self-esteem

Q:  What if I can't make my scheduled appointment?

A:  Please make sure you cancel at least 24 hours beforehand. Otherwise, you may be charged the late cancellation fee
